Question: For 8 years now i've been playing the piano, mostly classical music.
Time has come to try something else.
I'm specifically looking for a way to learn to play the blues.
Does anyone know about a guide about learning to play the blues on piano?
Or does anyone know about a guide on the Internet teaching blues chords?
Any help will be much appreciated
Answer: Call a music distributor and ask what books they have related to blues
piano- youll start picking up your own style with practice. Most
important start listening to more blues pianists and brush up on your
ear training skills and after that find out where the local blues
musicians have jams and just dive in- its usually only three chords and
you do with them what you like- you just have to listen for the changes.
As far as some great pianists to listen to here are some of my favorite
CD's and artists: Keys to the Crescent City (compilation), Floyd Dixon,
Charles Brown, Marsha Ball, Katie Webster, Gene Harris, Pinetop Perkins,
Professor Longhair, and Dr John. Youll find out there are different
styles of blues piano and decide for yourself what you like best. And
regardless of what they say, you dont have to be living out of your car
and eating out of a chicken bucket to play blues. If that were true, ALL
blues musicians would be heroin addicts and alcoholics. The everyday
pain of life and love is enough
You can have the blues in New York City, but not in Brooklyn or
Queens. Hard times in Vermont or North Dakota are just a depression.
Chicago, St. Louis, and Kansas City are still the best places to have the blues
If it occurs in a cheap motel or a shotgun shack, it's blues death.
Stabbed in the back by a jealous lover is a great blues way to die. So
is the electric chair, substance abuse, or being denied treatment in an
emergency room. It is not a blues death, if you die during a liposuction
treatment or through complications with rhinoplasty
