Question: I'm rather shocked to read that many AFers do not find Carolyn Bassett
Kennedy beautiful... what IS beautiful to you guys? I'm scared to meet
any of you in real life, now, because I may not live up to your standards.
Answer: I really don't think it's a matter of anyone purposely tearing apart CBK's
looks. It's just part of the inevitable backlash that occurs anytime the media
over-hypes and over-pushes ANYbody. There was such a storm of media attention
after she married JFK Jr. and much of it was hyperbolized to the point of being
ridiculous.
Yes, she had a classic and elegant sense of style but it was not originally
hers as the press insisted. She worked her way up at Calvin Klein, and like
anyone else who did the same she adopted the CK uniform. Many, many NYC and
Boston socialites wear the same look and had been long before CBK.
One article I read even said that Carolyn was "so stunning" that she was
offered her position at CK on the spot upon her arrival in NYC. This was
simply not true. She started as a sales person with CK in Boston, working her
way up to being a personal shopper for the Boston office, then to the NYC
office where she worked her way up to a publicist. I don't know why the story
was changed since there was certainly nothing "wrong" with the truth. In fact,
I think it's more admirable than if she had simply gained her spot by
"stunning" looks alone. Besides, she quit her job with CK shortly before her
marriage and did not work again for the remainder of her life. Yet the press
continued to label her "the CK stylist" or "the CK publicist", they couldn't
even agree on her job title and seemed to completely overlook the fact that she
didn't even *have* a job anymore.
Yes, she was certainly pretty but she was definitely NOT an ethereal, raving
beauty as much of the press insisted. She had a rather large, somewhat crooked
nose similar to Sarah Jessica Parker's. But the press seemed to completely
overlook that while there had been press comments about SJP's nose complete
with speculation about why she never opted for a rhinoplasty. But nothing of
the sort was said about Carolyn, even though their facial features were very
similar.
They continued to go on about this "fabulous beauty" without seeming to notice
her transformation. She looked much better and certainly happier before her
marriage. Even in the wedding pictures she looked great,
slim...happy...blonde....radiant.
But not long after that poor creature was way over-bleached, over-plucked,
over-dieted, and always seemed to have a sad wan expression. Maybe it was the
pressure, or the extreme media attention that wouldn't even allow her to leave
her own residence without being harassed. Whatever it was she began to
resemble a caged cockatoo suffering from a severe case of feather-pulling. It
seemed evident that even SHE didn't believe her own press and so developed some
kind of obsession with trying to live up to it.
