Revision Rhinoplasty
|
Question: Firstly, happy new year and please accept my apologies in advanced for
the length of this post ! Please bare with me.
Basically, I had Rhinoplasty about 7 years ago, the problem was
basically that my nose was 'twisted' (if you looked at it from the
front) & had a hump in it (from the profile view). The tip also
'drooped' a little, It was quite a mis-shapen nose and it bothered me
a lot ! So I took the plunge. After the first surgery, the tip no
longer drooped and the profile was virtually perfect. From the front
however, I still had a bump on one side of the upper bone, so about a
year after the initial surgery, I went back to the surgeon and he did
a revision rhinoplasty. He rasped the bump down. It's now about 5 or
6 years later and last year, I went back to the surgeon again because
it still looks really crooked. The surgeon agreed with me. There is
still a bump on the upper bone's left side, and when you move down the
nose, there are more problems, the nostrils are excessively
asymetrical, it's hard to explain but the left one is small and the
right is large but flatter because the part of the nose above it is
'collapsed'. Also, the bit of cartlidge in the middle (which runs from
the upper bone to the tip), doesn't seem central (in position) and
also is not symetrical (again, the left side is rather 'sticky outy'
and the right side kind colapsed) On top of all this, the whole nose
is off to the left. My surgeon pointed all of this out to me (I knew
it anyway). He said could do the work but also said he would like me
to go see someone else for a 2nd opinion as this other guy does a lot
of revision work. I went to see him but wasn't comfortable at all, he
was talking about putting the hump back in my nose (So that it would
look like it did before from profile !!) - I haven't been back to
either since. But I need to get this done. Should I go back to my
original surgeon or get a 'third' opinion ? Is this normal (Ie, each
revision gets more intricate - It seems like the first op. is like
'OK, lets just rasp that hump right off..... there ya go all done !).
Now, I'm not after a perfect nose, simply because I know that doesn't
exist and is relative, but I do want one I'm happy with and I know
that it could be a lot better (Confirmed by my surgeon) I'm determined
to get this done in 2004 so any advice would be great ! (I'm UK Based
BTW, SE).
Also, does anyone here know of any new techniques for Rhinoplasty that
do not require the nose to be broken (A friend recently had this done,
but I'm not sure what the benefits were). Thing is, I do Martial arts
and spar a lot - I wouldn't want to be off of training for a long time - is it possible to go back to this kind of training within like 2 or
three weeks with modern techniques or if the bone hasn't been broken ? (I don't normally take knocks in the face, but it does happen !)
Answer: I had 3 "procedures" between 1994-95 to basically re-construct my "maimed,
mutiliated, and malformed" (Dr's words, personally, I thought it just looked
pretty crooked and "humpy") nose. Nose broken the first time, the second and
third were "corrections", so didn't have to have it broken again. Anyway, the
first time, there was no extended period of being away from exercise. Granted,
any type of glasses on my face were a no-no, but after the initial cast type
thing was removed, I was back to normal activities.
As far as taking a hit in the nose, I would personally avoid it, even today!
