Nose Surgery Doctor

Question: Some of you know I've had a HUGE problem with nose sores for many years now.
Well, they *started* as sores, but eventually progressed to eating right
thru my septum and I now have a HUGE hoel in my septum which scabs up really
badly, bleeds, hurts like HELL, makes me sneeze all day, etc. etc. etc. For
years doctors have been telling me it's no big deal (they should walk a mile
with my nose!) and that it's probably just too dry where I live. Until
recently . . .
My new doc was concerned and took some swabs and determined that I'm an
antibiotic-resistant Staph carrier. He's put me on small doses of the few
antibiotics that I'm not resistant to, and each time they make my nose feel
better but the problems all return when I finish the Scrip. Most recently,
he put me on a long-term dose and also made an appt. for me with a
specialist. I went to see that specialist yesterday.
The guy took one look in my nose and said, "My GOD!!! That's a **HUGE**
hole. How on earth did you get such a huge hole in your nose. You need
surgery." Asked if I snort cocaine -- NO! Asked if I ever had nose
surgery -- NO! Asked if I ever broke my nose -- NO!
Apparently I need more than just a 'button', what they call an implant that
fits like a button into the hole. He's going to put in a splint which
basically replaces my WHOLE septum. Claims that I'll keep infecting as
long as the hole is open and it's so big it affects my airways and may cause
me *serious* problems in the not-too-distant future. He gave me a
corticosteroid spray for short-term use in the meantime, and he says the
infections'll clear after the surgery.
He also booked me for allergy tests and, after filling out the extensive
questionairre about my eating habits, condition, what I'm exposed to, etc.,
I think this doctor thinks some Fibro symptoms may be caused by allergies.
There were questions on the form such as -- Are you frequently fatigued? Do
you have muscle and/or joint pain? Where? All over? Do you have bowel
problems? Trouble sleeping? Frequent headaches? Nausea and/or Vomiting?
Unexplained pain? There were more that struck me as very fibro-related, but
I can't remember them all right now.
Answer: Hopefully the surgery will help. I'm sure you will feel worse for awhile
after, but much better once its healed. Surgery is never a pleasant
experience, but if you try to "think positive" over how much better you will
feel after you recover, it can help you get through it.
As to allergies & fms... FMS is a syndrome. We all experience pain and
fatigue, but our other problems vary. FMS itself can cause headaches,
digestive problems etc.. but so can allergies. You can have allergies and
FMS too. For example I get sinus and/or migraine headaches form certain
foods and beverages. It has nothing to do with FMS, which causes overall
pain. I get tummy aches and occasionally diarrhea from certain foods, but
they are different tummy aches then the kind I might get from FMS. My FMS
tummy aches tend to occurs in my abdominal muscles, while a food allergy
related tummy ache would be lower down in the intestines. Some foods make me
vomit, but again I think that's just my food allergies, nothing to do with
FMS. Allergies can cause trouble sleeping because if you have a runny nose
and are up blowing it all night long, its going to keep you from sleeping!
If you have a stuffy nose and cant breathe well, that can also disturb your
sleep.
Feeling foggy can be from allergies too. Lack of sleep due to allergies can
make you foggy, or some allergy medications that have drowsiness as a
potential side effect (like benadryl) can make you foggy and forgetful.
Newer prescription allergy meds are non-drowsy. For me Zyrtec works the
best, but some people other people prefer Claritin or Allegra instead.
You may find that if you treat your allergies, some of your "fms" symptoms
may clear up. Not necessarily the pain and fatigue, but many of the other
things might possibly be attributed to allergies. Its always worthwhile
to see an allergy specialist if you think allergies may be causing any of
your discomfort. Hopefully, in your case the surgery will do the trick
though!
