Nose Cartilage Surgery
|
Question: Is it true or just a "myth" that professional boxers have their nose
cartilage removed surgically so that they don't break their nose in
fights (as easily)? What about the nasal bone on the upper part of the
nose - isn't this still prone to breaking?
Does nose cartilage break easily? How big a deal is it to get one's
nose broken? What will be done medically? Will it be as it was before?
Will it more or less prone to breaking again? How long does it usually
take to heal?
Answer: *I have never heard of it.
Yes
Well, yes and no. It can be squashed out of shape pretty easily, but it
doesn't usually 'break'.
Not that much if you have medical care.
Depends. In the USA I guess you'd need decent coverage. A good cosmetic
surgeon would stuff cotton cylinders up your nostrils to keep them open,
give you a general anaesthetic, smash your nose with a mallet and then
wrap it in bandages to allow it to heal in place. The surgery is done
for people who can't breathe terribly well.
A cosmetic surgeon can perform 'rhinoplasty' or other techniques depending
on what you want.
More.
*I've heard about that before and am curious to know the answer myself.
I remember seeing Mills Lane on a show and someone asked if he was an
ex-boxer. His reply was by pushing his finger on his nose which
totally flattened. It definitely looked like he had no cartilage in
his nose whatsoever.
