Broken Nose Surgery
|
Question: I know broken noses are reality in MAs, especially in MMA, but I'm
interested in a few things. How frequently do you get your nose broken?
I know it depends on a lot of factors, like the art you're doing, level
of competition, etc. And, when your nose breaks, how bad is it? Is there
only blood or you get the dislocation also? Do you put it back in place
by yourself or do you seek medical help? Can it be fixed without the
surgery? I'm asking this because I got my nose broken once in a
streetfight and it got dislocated. The bones in the nose shattered so
badly that the doctor in hospital couldn't put it back in place the
other day beacause it got stuck. I had a nose surgery because I had
major problems. Couldn't breathe through my nose etc. It wasn't a
pleasant experience and I certainly would not to go through it once
more. Now I'm doing Muay Thai and I'm a bit concerned about the nose.
When sparring, I'm not wearing headgear, because I consider it to be
more harm than good. I received a few blows to the nose by now, but
nothing serious happened, just had a few bruises on the nose. The guys
in the gym all have straight noses and some of they compete in the
amateur Muay Thai. I saw that one of my trainers is the only one who has
a little dislocation of the nose, but he was a pro. So, tell me about
your experiences with broken noses. How often do those things happen
around you, how bad it is, etc...
Answer: Personally, I've had mine broken around three times over the course of maybe
five years. I say "around" because the third time I was doing a lot of
groundfighting and the nose took forever to heal, every time my face got
pressed into someone everything shifted around a bit (and I started gushing
blood, of course.)
None of the times was all that bad, the nose isn't really straight anymore
but most people don't notice it (I have asked people I know would give a
straight answer.) I never had a doc do anything more than just kinda nudge
things back into place and I can still breathe just fine through both
nostrils.
That said, I have seen at least one guy whose nose was hideously smashed,
the offending guy, embarrassingly enough, was me... a kick meant for his
chest went into his face. He did the wrong thing by trying to duck. This
is not to exonerate me, it was my bad. He was a newbie, and I was going too
hard. The nose was badly misshapen, or at least it looked like it under all
that blood. I never found out how bad it was, he never came back. Anyway,
bad ones do happen, but the more skilled you are, the less likely it will
be.
Watch those times you start fighting again after an extended layoff, though.
Those are the times very bad things happen, you're scary enough your
sparring partners can't afford to go easy on you, but still "off" enough
that you're more likely to walk into things. At least that's been my
experience.
